Two Penguin Chicks Hatch at the Aquarium of the Pacific

The Aquarium of the Pacific is announcing the birth of two Magellanic penguin chicks!

These two cuties were born to first-time parents Patsy and Noodles, and Kate and Avery.

The penguin chicks are currently being cared for by their parents in their nest burrows in the June Keyes Penguin Habitat and are not viewable by the public yet. They expect the chicks will leave their nests and join the other birds in the main areas of the penguin habitat later this summer.

“An Evening in Brazil” Family Jam at the LA Zoo

Family Jam at the LA Zoo is a new evening event for Southern California families featuring live music, dancing, zookeeper visits, food trucks and other great family fun. The event is sponsored by the hit animated feature film RIO 2 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and the theme is “An Evening in Brazil.”  The celebration provides a rare opportunity for after-hours viewing of popular animal exhibits as well as authentic Brazilian flavors and music to transport guests into an evening of fun.

Family Jam at the LA Zoo takes place on Saturday, July 12, 2014,  from 6 to 9 pm, at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. The party will feature samba music and dancing by Brazilian Samba Angels as well as music by Close Encounters, a live karaoke band that invites Zoo guests to perform favorite songs karaoke-style accompanied by the band.

RIO 2, available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on July 15, brings Brazilian fun and activities to the Zoo with crafts for kids, an interactive photo booth, special prizes, giveaways and more. Costumed characters will help families dance the night away while they have fun and learn new things on an educational scavenger hunt with “clues” to visit select areas throughout the Zoo. Guests will discover fun facts about animals, and special RIO 2 prizes will be given to those who complete the scavenger hunt.

Also included in the evening are keeper talks and animal encounters in some of the popular exhibits, including the new “Rainforest of the Americas.” As guests stroll the grounds to visit exhibits of endangered, rare and exotic animals in the Zoo collection, they’re offered a unique opportunity to see some of the Zoo’s animals at night, many of whom are more active during later hours.

No one will be going hungry with all of the popular food trucks that will be at the scene, including  Ta Bom (Brazilian cuisine), Vchos (Central American tapas), Dogtown Dogs (hot dogs and tater tots), The Pudding Truck (homemade stove-top puddings;), The Melt (grilled cheese sandwiches), Tornado Potato (spiral-cut potatoes), and Patty Wagon Burgers (sliders). Brazilian-inspired beverages, the Zoo’s famous churros, and frozen Sweet Treats will also be available for kids and adults.

Victoria Skimboards Returns To Aliso Beach With “The Vic”

Victoria Skimboards returns to Southern California with The VIC, previously known as the Victoria World Championship of Skimboarding (WCS). The VIC is the longest-running skimboard contest on the professional circuit and the only that offers a live broadcast of the competition for audiences to experience from all around the globe. The event will take place at Aliso Beach Park in Laguna Beach on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29.

This year marks the 38th year of the annual championship event. According to founder of Victoria Skimboards, Tex Haines, “The contest has the broadest global appeal of any other competitive skimboarding event on the pro circuit. We are taking the action from the local beach, and catapulting it to viewers worldwide.”

Riders from countries around the world, including Japan, Chile, Australia, Portugal, the Philippines, Spain and Mexico will be battling for the skimboard industry title of “World’s Best.” From barrel rides to aerial tricks to technical challenges, all of the top tricks and skills will be showcased at the contest.

The VIC will take place on June 28-29, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m at Aliso Beach Park, 31131 S. Pacific Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, CA 92652. Admission to the event is free, but there is a fee for parking.
