Knott’s Berry Farm is my favorite place for Halloween fun. They really go all out for Knott’s Scary Farm, and this year the whole park goes spooky for their family-friendly weekend celebration: Knott’s Spooky Farm. This daytime event is a non-scary celebration of cheer rather than fear with shows and activities all geared for kids ages 3-11.

Trick or Treating at Knott's

The event is a little different from the family Halloween events of Knott’s past. This year, guests can trick-or-treat their way through the Ghost Town streets, and be greeted at each door by only the friendliest ghosts and ghouls.

Knott's Spooky Hollow Maze(Photo Courtesy of: Cynthia Duarte)

The whole family can enjoy the winding maze of Spooky Hollow, located in Fiesta Village. Together you’ll travel through a spooky forest complete with gigantic jack-o-lanterns, creepy characters, and more. At the end, you can decorate your own pumpkin for a small fee.

Monster Masquerade Ball(Photo Courtesy of: Cynthia Duarte)

In the Monster Masquerade Ball, kids can make their own not-so-scary masks, and join in some spooky karaoke.

Other great activities include the Creepy Crawler Cabin, Snoopy’s Costume and Dance Party, and “The Monsters are Coming, Charlie Brown” in the Camp Spooky Theatre. Spooky Farm activities are included in regular park or season pass admission.

Spooky Farm Snoopy

If you want to enjoy Knott’s Spooky Farm and more, now is the time to buy a season pass! For a limited time, the 2016 Knott’s Berry Farm Season Pass includes one free 2015 visit for new Passholders. Renewing Passholders will receive a special renewal price and one free Fast Lane to use any day when Fast Lane is sold through 12/18/15! (But hurry, this offer ends November 2!)

Build-A-Scare at Goodwill This Halloween

For Goodwill of Orange County, the busiest shopping season of the year isn’t the retail extravaganza that is Black Friday – it happens much sooner: Halloween. Halloween has become such a big business for them, that sections within the stores devoted to all things Halloween have sprung up across all of their 22 retail locations. SoCal Locale contributor, Jen, attended a free media event to learn how Goodwill is the best kept secret for those on the hunt for the perfect Halloween costume. From wigs and accessories to unforgettable getups, Goodwill is the ultimate Halloween emporium.

Halloween Build A Scare with Goodwill OC

Hi friends! I know there are lots of places to get Halloween costumes, but have you thought about Goodwill? Goodwill of Orange County is the place to go – not only do they section off an area of stores with items that would be perfect to build Halloween costumes for the whole family (including pets!), but they also have a great selection of Halloween decorations to costume your house too!

I’m a sucker for thrift store fashions and Halloween is my favorite holiday. For all of you vintage mavens and horror fanatics, the Halloween costume section at Goodwill of Orange County is great to pick through for your new favorite item of clothing to wear all year. Trust me – it’s what I do! When I’m looking through the racks trying to build the perfect costume, it’s impossible for me not to see things that I could rotate into my wardrobe. I mean, how could I pass up that cool skull t-shirt or those black cat ears? Maybe that’s just me though. 😉

I stopped by one of the Goodwill of Orange County stores this week for a fun costume contest event! A group of us bloggers and influencers paired up in teams and competed against each other in costume contests using the Halloween racks in the store. The first contest was to build a classic costume but put a twist on it! My teammate, Fely from Le Fashion & Beauty dressed up for this one and we came up with a pirate on vacation. Conveniently, this year’s Halloween themes at Goodwill include pirates, superheroes, princesses, witches, and more so finding the right items was a snap. Oh and guess what…we won!

The second contest was to dress up as a superhero. People came up with some really fun costume ideas – even some made-up superheroes! My partner and I ended up dressing me up as a superhero mermaid, an underwater crime fighter, if you will. 😉 We had so much fun layering different textures and colors to create my mermaid superhero look. Oh, and did I mention that we did it all in 8 minutes?!

Halloween Build A Scare with Goodwill OC

If we were able to pull together two costumes in about 15 minutes, imagine how easy it will be for you to do the same! Goodwill of Orange County also supplements the donated clothing with new, purchased items for Halloween including wigs, hats, masks, and more. Speaking of donated clothing, Goodwill also welcomes donations of any old costumes – bring in yours today – maybe you’ll walk out with another one!

Goodwill of Orange County is the O.C.’s largest non-profit. When you’re thinking of where to buy your Halloween costumes this year, remember that revenue from the purchase of Halloween items supports Goodwill’s job training and career services for the thousands of people Goodwill serves annually. That said, did you know that Halloween is the busiest shopping season of the year for Goodwill of Orange County?

So now that you know where you’re getting your Halloween costumes, what are you going to dress up as? Do you like classic costumes like ghosts or witches or are you into modern pop culture references? Let’s talk Halloween costumes!

Attention all Orange County moms: Get your babysitters ready! You’re not going to want to miss this one-of-a-kind mom’s night out event.

Irvine Full Graphic

The Pump and Dump: A Parentally Incorrect Comedy Show and Night Out for Once, is a wildly popular, nationally acclaimed moms night out evening, full of laughter, drinking, music, games, prizes (wine!), and parental commiseration. The show has been running in Denver, Colorado for almost 3 years, and started traveling the country in late 2013 to bring the fun to parents everywhere. Next month they are bringing it to Orange County for one night only!

Comedian/musician Shayna Ferm and her sidekick, MC Doula (aka Tracey Tee), host this raucous evening of comedy and music, designed for parents to laugh away a kid-filled day while throwing a few back and remembering who we all were before we had children. Live musical performances are spread throughout the evening with songs like “Eat Your F-ing Food,” and “When I Die, I Want to Come Back as a Dad.” Audience participation includes “Stump the Breeder” and “The Most F-ed Up Thing Your Kid Did This Week.”

In addition to being on their 2015 national tour of the Pump and Dump show, Shayna and Tracey are also twice-monthly contributors to TheBump.com, and have been featured in Parents Magazine, HuffPost Parents and Scary Mommy. The duo has three children under the age of five between the two of them, and to be honest, they probably need this night out as much as you do.

Discovery Cube OC Expansion and Summer Happenings (Plus Membership Giveaway!)

Have you heard about what’s new at The Cube? We were invited to a sneak preview of the new exhibits before they opened to the public and wanted to share some of the exciting news! Since changing its name from Discovery Science Center to the Discovery Cube almost a year ago, a lot has changed! Residents and visitors may have noticed a lot of construction, painting, and rearranging. Today, the Discovery Cube finally unveils the fruit of all of this labor. The new, expanded, Discovery Cube is almost double its original size.

Welcome Discovery Cube OC Expansion

The new building has a definite focus on issues that are important to Southern California, including an area devoted to education on the properties of water, and water conservation.

Discovery Cube Aquavator

Residents and visitors alike can enjoy an aerial tour of some of Orange County’s incredible landscapes. Whether you just moved here, are on vacation, or have lived here your entire life, it will give you a new appreciation of the beauty around you.

Discovery Cube Helicopter Tour

Many of the new exhibits offer families  an opportunity to explore themed science adventures, interactive programs, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning spaces. They also help cultivate an appreciation for the smallest ecosystems on earth to the largest exploration of the cosmos. Starting in their own backyard, kids can help identify ways to safely keep pests out of the home in the Inspector Training Course, presented by the Orange County Vector Control District.

Discovery Cube Inspector Training

In the Mission Control Center, you can build your own satellite on one of the touch screens, and then watch it in orbit on the interactive big screens.

Discovery Cube Mission Control

The expansion also includes the 10,000 square-foot Julianne Argyros Showcase Theater and Exhibition Hall. It provides the ability to transform from an exhibition space into a 500-seat theater. You can currently catch an in-depth exhibit on Sherlock Holmes that includes artifacts, a murder mystery, and real forensic crime-solving.

Discovery Cube Sherlock Holmes

Once of the biggest changes at the new Discovery Cube is an emphasis on nutrition and healthy eating. The fast food is gone, and in its place is Bean Sprouts Cafe. This kid-friendly cafe specializes in healthy foods for visitors of all ages, and supplements its regular menu with vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, casein-free, nut-free and egg-free options. Later in the year they will be debuting the Petersonville Healthy Kitchen, a full, working demonstration kitchen, presented by Sheila and Jim Peterson. It will let children become chefs creating good-for-them recipes. In addition, they will learn valuable kitchen safety tips as part of this health and wellness exhibit.

Theatre For Young Audiences: OZ 2.5 at South Coast Repertory

I received two free tickets to see OZ 2.5 at South Coast Repertory. No other compensation was given. I am merely sharing a great experience.

South Coast Repertory OZ 2.5

Before this past Sunday, I had never gone to see a professional play. Yes, I said never! Sure I’ve seen plenty of school plays, and I’ve watched certain plays and musicals on television, but in almost 30 years I have managed to not once see actors on a stage amaze me with their talents in person. That is pretty sad. South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa is encouraging young theatre enthusiasts with their Theatre for Young Audiences program, so that they don’t end up like me.

Theatre for Young Audience performances have:

  • Shorter performance lengths.
  • Kid-friendly themes.
  • Family-friendly prices.
  • Informal cast meet & greet after the show (on weekends).

South Coast Repertory OZ 2.5 Play

Although OZ 2.5 is geared toward young audiences, I’ll have to admit that I found it both interesting and hilarious. The description of the play caught my eye, and I just had to check it out.

“Oz was never like this! That’s because it’s OZ 2.5: brighter, bolder, customized for every player, surprises around every corner—yes it’s a children’s classic set in a video game world! Dee’s screen name is Dorothy14, and with the help of Scarecrow, Tin Man and cowardly Lion, she gets through each level on her way to defeating the Witch of the Western Realm. But what happens when she wins the game and wants to go back to Kansas? Log on and find out.”

Although it is recommended for grades K through 6, adults can enjoy it too. There are plenty of jokes that are over the kids’ heads. I was wondering how they would make it look like it took place inside of a video game, and they did an amazing job. The set was colorful and exciting, and there were a lot of scene changes throughout the show. The audience was captivated throughout the entire play.

South Coast Repertory OZ 2.5 Cast Signings

OZ 2.5 is running through June 7th. This is the last weekend to catch it, so make sure you head to scr.org and get your tickets!
