NEW at Knott’s: Voyage to the Iron Reef

We were given free tickets to Knott’s Berry Farm and special passes to ride the new Voyage to the Iron Reef ride before it opened to the public. We are sharing our opinions here, and did not receive any other compensation.

Voyage to the Iron Reef Entrance

Voyage to the Iron Reef is the newest attraction at Knott’s Berry Farm. This interactive 4-D attraction takes guests on an adventure aboard submarine-inspired vehicles through enchanting underwater forests, disorienting ocean current tunnels, mysterious mechanical wreckage, and high definition 3D animation.

Voyage to the Iron Reef Still 1

The scene is set in what looks like a post-apocalyptic Knott’s Berry Farm Boardwalk. Once you’ve submerged, you’re bombarded with underwater robotic monsters that seem to come right out of the screen at you. Shoot them to get rid of them and earn points!

Voyage to the Iron Reef shooting

I took my boys with me, as well as my dad. Between the four us, everyone absolutely loved the ride. It was thrilling, challenging, and a lot of fun. We had some friendly competition going on. I’m notoriously competitive, and was happy to come out on top every time we rode it. (Not bragging or anything…)

Riding Voyage to the Iron Reef

I wasn’t too far short of the day’s top scores. I’m planning on going back soon to take first place. I have some tricks to getting a higher score, and I’m going to share them with you.

Voyage to the Iron Reef High Score

1. Ride once or twice just for fun. Don’t expect a top score right out of the gate! Ride a few times just for enjoyment, and get a feel for what happens in the ride. (Fun fact: Easter eggs of various iconic treasures from Knott’s past are hidden throughout the ride and interact with the blast of a freeze ray. Hint: Look for the famous Roaring 20s sign!)

2. Stay Calm. Don’t let the excitement mess you up! There are twists, turns and things that jump out at you. Keep your eye on the prize, stay calm, and just shoot.

3. Aim for medallions. On each screen, there will be a few of them. Aim for those before shooting any of the creatures. Those are worth more points!

4. Get the kill. This is just my own speculation, but I think that killing creatures is worth more than just hitting them. Some take 2 shots, others take more. Shoot until they’re gone and rack up the points.

5. Make sure to shoot the Kraken and The Queen as many times as you can. Hit the targets in their tentacle claws. Those seemed to collect a good amount of points.

Now that you know my secrets, you might find yourself on the leader board the next time you ride Voyage to the Iron Reef! Happy shooting!

Heirlooms & Hardware – New Costa Mesa Location!

H&H Lights

Have you heard of the eclectic Heirlooms and Hardware store yet? We were invited to attend the grand opening in Costa Mesa last month and it was amazing. The flagship store was originally in SOCO but this new space in Costa Mesa is double the size – which means you get more room to shop, design your own custom furniture from salvaged wood, and see the H&H team work their magic.

H&H is a family-owned business that opened in 2011. Joseph and Jessica D’Ambra, the founders, are a husband and wife team and Jennifer, a sibling, is the Director of Operations. “People come to us because we not only make quality furniture at affordable prices, but also because we invite them to experience the process of custom furniture design and construction, a nearly lost art,” says Jennifer D’Ambra. “Our new, larger location makes it easier for customers to browse through our store or to work closely with Joe to design furniture of their own imagination.”

The grand opening event was so much fun but the best part was that a portion of proceeds from the event benefited Orange-based nonprofit Inspire Artistic Minds, which is a community culture project offering experiences and scholarships in the arts of taste, sight, and sound. We love the idea of giving back to our OC community!

The Burnt Truck: Creative Sliders and More

The Burnt Truck invited us to have lunch with them recently. We really enjoyed trying some of their tasty offerings and are excited to share our thoughts.

Food trucks are plentiful in Southern California. Almost any day of the week you can find a truck – or gathering of trucks – to eat at. Some are okay and easily forgettable. Others stand out among the rest and are the kind of trucks that you seek out as often as possible. For me, The Burnt Truck is one of those.

If you’ve never heard of The Burnt Truck, you might think, “Burnt? That doesn’t sound good.” Thankfully, their food is perfectly cooked and prepared every time. The Burnt Truck’s mission statement is to “bring distinctively upscale taste to the streets of Orange County without all the fuss and nonsense of a high-end restaurant.” They also leave off the big price tag too. For less than $10 you can get two sliders, a side and a drink.

The Burnt Truck is known for their sliders. They have put together some amazing delicious creations on their rotating menu. While the classics like the Cheeseburger or Fried Chicken sliders are always a safe bet, you’ll really be wowed by some of their more interesting combinations like the Meatloaf Slider, (Baked Potato Spread, Meatloaf, Ketchup Glaze, Buttermilk Onion Rings) and the Vegetarian Slider (Fried Mozzarella Cheese, Basil Aioli, Tomato Jam.) And for the ultimate in slider awesomeness, just get yourself a PB&J made with their very own pretzel peanut butter.

Whatever your taste, they have something you’ll love on The Burnt Truck.

Check out their full menu and weekly schedule on The Burnt Truck website, and keep up with them on Twitter & Instagram. Can’t get enough of them? Stay tuned for the opening of their upcoming restaurant collab with the folks at Dogzilla – It’s called Burntzilla!
