Things to Know Before You Try A Sensory Deprivation Tank

The latest craze in alternative medicine is called Flotation Therapy, which uses a sensory deprivation tank. After hearing about this new way to “relax, purify, and soothe”, I decided to try it.

The basic idea is that you float in a tub full of warm water and Epsom salt inside an enclosed environment where all your senses are blocked or otherwise dulled.

To proceed with my experiment, I bought a Groupon for the Awaken Float Lounge in Orange. Check 0ut their website here. The owner Eric told me he personally floats 3 days a week for about 90 minutes. Awaken Float Lounge has been open since March 2016.

What to Know Before you Go:

  1. You will float without any effort. There is so much Epsom salt in the tub that it’s almost impossible not to stay buoyant. About 1/3 of your body is above water, so you can still breathe.
  2. You can choose to close the door to the tank entirely, blocking all outside sound and light; or leave it cracked.  I left it open for about 10 minutes, then closed it. It is not recommended to keep opening and closing it because it interrupts the serenity of the experience
  3. The benefits of floating include stress relief, flushing away toxins, lessened pain, and pure relaxation.
  4. Floats average 60-90 minutes, but a gentlemen I met told me he floated for 4 hours one day.
  5. You may think – what am I going to do for 90 minutes?! Some people fall asleep, some people daydream. I personally was caught in a trance-like state.
  6. The experience is surreal and hard to explain but the closest explanation I can think of is that it feels like what your mother’s womb must feel like – warm, comfortable, dark, and peaceful.
  7. It’s easy to lose track of time and reality because all your senses are blocked. You can’t hear or see anything and all you feel is the warm water on your skin. To help pull you back to reality, soft music is played to signal the end of the session.
  8. Those who are afraid of small spaces/the dark (like myself) will be uncomfortable at first, but if they can relax enough they will enjoy the experience.
  9. Anyone can float, including those with medical conditions & pregnant women.

Being a Type A personality, I was skeptical about Flotation Therapy. I often have trouble relaxing, and being constantly surrounded by technology can be both a blessing and a curse. After having spinal problems all my life, I am always willing to try any kind of therapy that might help. I do believe Flotation Therapy helped me both relax and soothed my muscle aches, and I would recommend it. I believe everyone can benefit from this experience.

The normal price for each 90-minute session at Awaken Float is $55 ($45 for your first time).
