Live Your Nightmares at Knott’s Scary Farm

I was provided with tickets and Fright Lane passes to attend opening night at Knott’s Scary Farm. All opinions are my own and not influenced in any way.

Knott’s Scary Farm is no doubt Orange County’s favorite annual haunt event. It’s definitely something that I, as a horror fan and thrill seeker, look forward to every single year. Locals and visitors flock to the gates of Knott’s Berry Farm after dark, just so they can live their worst nightmares. I wasn’t sure what to expect for the 2017 season – would they be able to come up with something that really scared me? Spoiler alert: Yes. Yes they would.

A fan-favorite returning this year is the Merry Christmas, Snoopy! ice show. Booths full of beautiful handmade gift items line the streets, so you can do a little holiday shopping while the Calico Carolers stroll through serenading you with seasonal favorites. Another highlight of the Christmas Craft Village is the glass-blowing and chainsaw sculpting demonstrations done throughout the day. The Village is included with regular park admission, and is also open to the public for free Monday through Thursday, November 23rd through December 10th.

Knott’s Berry Farm is my favorite place for Halloween fun. They really go all out for Knott’s Scary Farm, and this year the whole park goes spooky for their family-friendly weekend celebration: Knott’s Spooky Farm. This daytime event is a non-scary celebration of cheer rather than fear with shows and activities all geared for kids ages 3-11.

Trick or Treating at Knott's

The event is a little different from the family Halloween events of Knott’s past. This year, guests can trick-or-treat their way through the Ghost Town streets, and be greeted at each door by only the friendliest ghosts and ghouls.

Knott's Spooky Hollow Maze(Photo Courtesy of: Cynthia Duarte)

The whole family can enjoy the winding maze of Spooky Hollow, located in Fiesta Village. Together you’ll travel through a spooky forest complete with gigantic jack-o-lanterns, creepy characters, and more. At the end, you can decorate your own pumpkin for a small fee.

Monster Masquerade Ball(Photo Courtesy of: Cynthia Duarte)

In the Monster Masquerade Ball, kids can make their own not-so-scary masks, and join in some spooky karaoke.

Other great activities include the Creepy Crawler Cabin, Snoopy’s Costume and Dance Party, and “The Monsters are Coming, Charlie Brown” in the Camp Spooky Theatre. Spooky Farm activities are included in regular park or season pass admission.

NEW at Knott’s: Voyage to the Iron Reef

We were given free tickets to Knott’s Berry Farm and special passes to ride the new Voyage to the Iron Reef ride before it opened to the public. We are sharing our opinions here, and did not receive any other compensation.

Voyage to the Iron Reef Entrance

Voyage to the Iron Reef is the newest attraction at Knott’s Berry Farm. This interactive 4-D attraction takes guests on an adventure aboard submarine-inspired vehicles through enchanting underwater forests, disorienting ocean current tunnels, mysterious mechanical wreckage, and high definition 3D animation.

Voyage to the Iron Reef Still 1

The scene is set in what looks like a post-apocalyptic Knott’s Berry Farm Boardwalk. Once you’ve submerged, you’re bombarded with underwater robotic monsters that seem to come right out of the screen at you. Shoot them to get rid of them and earn points!

Voyage to the Iron Reef shooting

I took my boys with me, as well as my dad. Between the four us, everyone absolutely loved the ride. It was thrilling, challenging, and a lot of fun. We had some friendly competition going on. I’m notoriously competitive, and was happy to come out on top every time we rode it. (Not bragging or anything…)

Riding Voyage to the Iron Reef

I wasn’t too far short of the day’s top scores. I’m planning on going back soon to take first place. I have some tricks to getting a higher score, and I’m going to share them with you.

Voyage to the Iron Reef High Score

1. Ride once or twice just for fun. Don’t expect a top score right out of the gate! Ride a few times just for enjoyment, and get a feel for what happens in the ride. (Fun fact: Easter eggs of various iconic treasures from Knott’s past are hidden throughout the ride and interact with the blast of a freeze ray. Hint: Look for the famous Roaring 20s sign!)

2. Stay Calm. Don’t let the excitement mess you up! There are twists, turns and things that jump out at you. Keep your eye on the prize, stay calm, and just shoot.

3. Aim for medallions. On each screen, there will be a few of them. Aim for those before shooting any of the creatures. Those are worth more points!

4. Get the kill. This is just my own speculation, but I think that killing creatures is worth more than just hitting them. Some take 2 shots, others take more. Shoot until they’re gone and rack up the points.

5. Make sure to shoot the Kraken and The Queen as many times as you can. Hit the targets in their tentacle claws. Those seemed to collect a good amount of points.

Now that you know my secrets, you might find yourself on the leader board the next time you ride Voyage to the Iron Reef! Happy shooting!
